Greetings Gamers and Gamettes!
I bring you tidings of great joy and gamingness!
(Gamettes are female gamers, in case you were wondering. Yes, I know they can just be referred to as Gamers [Social Justice Warriors are going to have a field day with that] but I chose to use this nomenclature as special mention. If you have an issue with that, let me know in the comments section. I would love to read and discuss. *suggestive wink*)
It has been a whole 3 month since I FINALLY got a replacement Power Supply for my Xbox One. (My son destroyed the original one I had. I make mention of it in a few of my older posts. Go read them if you don't believe me! *suggestive wink*) The one in the link isn't the one I actually bought but it gives an idea of what I'm referring to. (That way everyone can be on the same page) However, I am now kicking myself, repeatedly, for adhering to my "Only buy OFFICIAL" Policy. (Hindsight is 20/20) I am now realizing that the "After Market" version of the power supply is dual-voltage and costs half as much as the "Official" one. I would have saved enough money to buy a game (or a controller) and it would also eliminate the worry of having to 1. Always check the voltage I'm plugging it into and 2. Reminding my family to only plug it into the right voltage. *kicks self some more*
You first-world readers may be wondering "Why would he need to check the voltage? I just plug my system into any wall outlet and I'm good!" And you would be correct because first-worlders only have 1 voltage rating in their homes. Americans have 100 - 120 Volts and Europeans have 200 - 240 Volts.
(This link shows a list of countries and their voltages) Antigua, on the other hand, (being a past dependent of Europe and a largely "Americanized" society) has a double voltage system. So depending on where in the island you live, your voltage will vary between one of the two i.e. either 100 - 120 Volts (American) or 200 - 240 Volts (European). We locally refer to the voltages as "110" (Pronounced "one ten" - considered American) and "220" (Pronounced "two twenty" - considered European). In some villages, we even have both voltages present within them (I lived in such a village *sigh*). It is common place to ask someone "A wha currant you hab?" (Translation: "What voltage does your house carry?") especially before plugging in one's electronics. As plugging a 110V (American) item into a 220V (European) outlet will, literally, cause it to explode (albeit a tiny explosion, often accompanied by exclamatory expletives) destroying what ever item you just plugged in. If you happen to plug a 220V (European) item into a 110V (American) outlet the item will not explode but it will not function as expected (or not at all). A further complication to the matter occurs because we source many of our electronics from both markets so some items will be American and some European, each, with their respective voltage ratings attached (110 and 220 respectively). Hence the reason for ascertaining the voltage before plugging in any and all electronics. If you happen to own an item but have the incorrect voltage (Relatives in first-world countries don't care about voltages. They just send what they can... and we gladly accept) you can always use a transformer (Not Michael Bay's Transformers. You delightfully nerdy individual you *hi5*) to convert the voltage. We call them "Step-up" or "Step-down" transformers, depending on what you need done. Step-up Transformers (as the name implies) changes the voltage from 110 to 220 (from American to European) and Step-down Transformers are vice versa.
In the more recent years appliance suppliers have started the practice of purchasing dual-volt items i.e. items that can use either of the voltages. This has alleviated much of the headaches and annoyances mentioned but old habits die hard and a lot of people (older ones especially) will still find out the voltage of the abode before plugging in anything.
My son (who is not an older person and [as most teens are] somewhat irresponsible) unplugged my Power Supply from its transformer because he needed to use the transformer for something else (another appliance). He then plugged my (110/American) Xbox Power Supply into the (220/European) wall outlet of our home and, needless to say, it went POOF (Literally)!!! There was a small explosion, sparks and flame included, followed by wafting tendrils of smoke and the smell of burnt electronic components. A section of the plastic housing even melted away. Good Times!!! (Obvious sarcasm is obvious) I was livid about the matter but I restrained myself and no child was harmed in the making of this post *suggestive wink*. My lovely wife and I had a discussion about it and she decided that she would buy a new Power Supply for me. A month or so passed and I still hadn't heard any word about the purchase so I figured that it wasn't made. Guess what? I was right! *big goofy smile* She told me she had totally forgot about it (She's prone to forgetting stuff) and would deal with it later. More time passed and still no Power Supply so I inquired again. This time, my lovely wife let me know that I was being a nuisance, bothering her about my trivial Power Supply. She had more important matters to attend to and a stupid Power Supply was low on her list of priorities.
This was when I lost it.
So I sat down and said nothing (which is the smart thing to do when your angry). After we both calmed down I told her in no uncertain terms that I wanted my Power Supply ASAP and I didn't care what financial obligations we had to fulfill. I was going to have my Power Supply within a reasonable time frame. (Boss Mode Activated!)
That was some 6 months ago. Shows how much I know. (Game Over)
What ended up happening was this: (Another series of unfortunate events [Me = Lemony Snickets]) I saved the money for the Power Supply and ordered it, asked for it to be shipped by sea (It's cheaper), heard it would take about 4 weeks to arrive, left feeling like a boss, waited for arrival date to arrive, notified the shipment with my Power Supply was lost at sea (the ship was hit by a hurricane), told to wait a bit longer for my Power Supply, I agreed (because I'm cool like that), waited a bit then asked when to expect my Power Supply, heard it will be here in 2 weeks, anxiously awaited new arrival date, Courier disappeared with shipment (authorities still can't locate the guy), I show up and there's no Power Supply (but I don't cry because I'm a big boy), apologized to for the terribly inconvenience and offered a loaner, said I'll wait for my Power Supply to get here, shipment arrives and Power Supply is present, got the call "Come get your stuff", showed up ready to collect, Power Supply was sold to another customer (Profound Sadness), I leave defeated, offered a loaner Power Supply until mine gets here, I refused (because of pride and disappointment but mostly pride) decided to forget about gaming because my heart can't take anymore, wallowed in self-pity, notified sales-rep is bringing Power Supply to my home, said "No need" and left work early to pick up Power Supply, Co-worker called in sick leaving me to pull a double shift (I can't catch a break), FINALLY picked up Power Supply and brought it home, forgot to pick up my Xbox One from SSG (where it has been [safely kept] for months), collected Xbox One the day after.
I kid you not! This ACTUALLY happened. Those events. In that order. The struggle is real! (Or I, vehemently, need to start adding points to my Luck Stat. My luck is AWFUL!!!)
[I am sorry for neglecting you Luck Stat! I have seen the error of my ways]
My NEW Power Supply has made me content!
I've started going through my Xbox backlog (even though I still haven't finished my PS3 backlog, yet) [I vow to do so]. I have played through 13 (Path of Exile, Slime Rancher, Heavy Weapon, Clicker Heroes, Runbow, Borderlands, The Cave, Limbo, The Force Unleashed 2, The Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, Minecraft Storymode and Game of Thrones) [Yes, I got ALL the FREE Telltale Games] of the 60 or so games I've collected and my Gamerscore has gone up to 16250. (You can check out my Gamerscore for yourself, if you're so inclined, and add me as a friend while you're at it. My Gamertag is Ryuji268) It's supposed to be a lot higher but I had to relinquish my old Xbox account after I forgot the credentials used to sign in. (Profound sadness *hangs head in shame*. That account had a Gamerscore of OVER 9000 [DBZ reference])
My plan is to go through the backwards compatible Xbox 360 games that I have then move on to the Xbox One games but that may not happen. Some games are a bit more appealing than others *shrugs* and I'm saving specific ones to play couch co-op with my lovely wife *suggestive wink*. I'll let you know how it turns out. (Will probably be its own post)
In the mean time, I'm gonna go do some research for a future post, start saving up for a second controller and play a few more games from the backlog.
*whispers* Not necessarily in that order!
*grabs my controller*
(I may also sneak a peek at some achievement guides while I'm researching. Gamerscore is life)!
A glimpse into the life (and mind) of The Antiguan Gamer (T.A.G)!!! Keep up to date with what's going on with THIS gamer as I dish out experiences, info, intel, reviews, updates and what ever else I can!!!
